Reactivity data:
1) Stability: stable
2) Conditions to avoid: heat generated upon dilution with water, dilute by
adding to water
3) Incompatibility: do not mix with acids. avoid contact with aluminum and
other soft metals, may release carbon monoxide when reacted with some
sugars
4) Hazardous decomposition of byproducts: hydrogen gas released upon contact
with aluminum and other soft metals
5) Hazardous polymerization: will not occur
Emergency and first aid procedures:
1) Ingestion: administer large quantities of water or milk, do not include
vomiting, never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person, get
medical attention immediately
2) Inhalation: remove victim to fresh air, if breathing has stopped administer
artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult give oxygen. If breathing does not
return to normal within few minutes get medical attention immediately
3) Eye contact: water is the only accepted method of removal of sodium
hydroxide from the eyes. You may have 10 seconds or less to avoid
permanent injury. Therefore, immediately flush eyes to clear running water
lifting upper and lower lids.
4) Skin contact: flush skin with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes while
removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Prompt medical attention is
essential. Wash clothing before reuse, discard shoes
Control measures:
1) Respiratory protection: when misting conditions exist, use NIOSH / MSA
approved mist mask. If respiratory irritation is experienced, use NIOSH /
MSA approved air-purifying respirator
2) Protective gloves: butyl or other impervious material with long gauntlets
3) Eye protection: chemical goggles with splash shields. Full face shield may
be desirable to protect face from splattering
4) Other protective clothing or equipment: impervious apron, boots, or full-body
suit as required to protect depending on the operation and potential for
exposure
