Product Name: Paraquat

Chemical name: 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium

Paraquat dichloride forms colorless, hygroscopic crystals, decomposing at 300°C, v.p. negligible. It is easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in short-china alcohol, and practically insoluble in most other organic solvents. It is stable in neutral and acidic media, but readily oxidized in alkaline media. Tech salts are corrosive to common metals.

Paraquat destroys green plant tissue by contact action with some translation. It is rapidly inactivated on contact with soil. Uses include stubble cleaning, pasture renovation and weed control in plantation crops.

Toxicity: paraquat dichloride
Acute oral LD50 for rats 150mg/kg, for mice 104mg/kg, for dogs 25-50mg/kg, and for sheep 70mg/kg. Acute percutaneous LD50 for rabbits 236-500mg paraquat ion/kg, irritating to skin and eyes. Absorption through intact human skin is minimal; exposures can cause irritation and a delay in the healing of cuts and wounds; can cause temporary damage to nails. If inhaled, may cause nose bleeding. Other has serious delayed effects if absorbed. Fish toxicity: TLM (48hrs) is 62ppm for rainbow trout, TLM (48 hrs) is 40ppm for carp.
